Powell G. Ogletree was born and reared in Neshoba County, Mississippi. He attended Mississippi Southern College in 1942 before serving in North Africa and Italy during World War II. He returned to school, earning a degree in 1951. Two years later, he became the school's first director of alumni affairs, a position he held until 1987.
